Here's your weekly bulletin highlighting upcoming UN Observances, Caribbean participation in UN Affairs and key events hosted by the UN System in the Caribbean.
Wednesday 5 June – As climate records are shattered and emissions continue to rise UN Secretary-General António Guterres will set out some hard hitting truths about the state of the climate, the grotesque risk leaders are running, and what companies and countries — particularly the G7 and the G20 — need to do over the next eighteen months to salvage humanity’s chances of a liveable future.
The Secretary-General will also share new data from the World Meteorological Organization, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the Indicators of Global Climate Change

Upcoming Activities in Guyana
Thursday 6 June - UN Guyana in collaboration with the French Embassy will host 'Blue Talks' as part of preparations for the 2025 UN Oceans Conference. Friday 7 June – The UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Guyana will host a pride month flag raising and round table discussion with LGBTIQ groups.
Created in 2023, the L'Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents Caribbean for Women in Science program is committed to supporting the involvement of young women in scientific research and scientific careers. This program identifies and rewards brilliant young women researchers in life and environmental sciences, material sciences, mathematics, computer and information sciences, engineering sciences and technology.
Monday 3 June - World Bicycle Day is observed to draw attention to the benefits of using the bicycle: a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.
Tuesday 4 June - International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression exists because children living in wars across the globe are facing unspeakable horrors. This observance highlights the need to end and prevent grave violations against children in the context of armed conflict.
Wednesday 5 June - World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
Thursday 6 June - Russian Language Day is observed as part of the UN's program to support and develop multilingualism and cultural diversity and maintain equal rights for all six official UN languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and French.
Friday 7 June - World Food Safety Day aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will join partners to broadcast a live event Wednesday 5 June at 11 am AST here: https://www.fao.org/americas/events/event-detail/dmia-2024/en
Saturday 8 June - World Oceans Day 2024 is observed under the theme “Awaken New Depths”. For this observance, the UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists to showcase how our relationship with the ocean needs to urgently change since our efforts to date have only skimmed the surface.
