The Week Ahead with the UN in the Caribbean: 9 - 15 September 2024

Your weekly bulletin highlighting upcoming UN Observances, Caribbean participation in UN Affairs and key events hosted by the UN System in the Caribbean.
Monday 9 - 11 September - The eighth meeting of the Caribbean Development Roundtable (CDR) and thethirtieth session of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC) will be held at theHilton Trinidad and Conference Centre in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from 9 to 11 September 2024 and on 11 September 2024, respectively.
These events are being held at a time when the Caribbean is animated by the recently concluded Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States, which set a decisive agenda for SIDS in pursuit of resilient growth and sustainable development with the support of the international community.
Hosted by the Caribbean office of the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the events will bring together regional and international development thinkers and practitioners, leaders and senior policy makers from the ECLAC member States and associate member countries, representatives of the United Nations system, regional and international financial institutions, academia, civil society, the private sector, and other development partners.
These sessions of the CDR and the CDCC offer the countries of the subregion an opportunity to sharpen their focus on the complex challenges that continue to confront them, and that require global solidarity and partnership in pursuit of innovative problem-solving strategies and actions.
Tuesday 10 September - Young people, ages 16 to 35, from Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten are invited to attend a 'Summit of the Future Youth Dialogue' hosted by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Trinidad and Tobago. The dialogue takes place from 5pm to 7 pm local time (AST).
Monday 09 September - International Day to Protect Education from Attack, led by UNESCO and UNICEF, serves to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living in countries affected by conflict.
Thursday 12 September - United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation promotes solidarity among peoples and countries of the global South. Through South-South collaboration, developing countries share knowledge, skills, expertise and resources to meet their development goals through concerted efforts.
Sunday 15 September - International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. In the lead up to the 2024 observance, The United Nations Democracy Fund and the United Nations Office for Partnerships will host the special event "Navigating AI for Governance and Citizen Engagement".
