This visit takes place during CARICOM's 50th anniversary celebrations and follows a May visit by the Secretary-General to Jamaica
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Trinidad and Tobago to address the 45th Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government of CARICOM, which convenes in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, from 3 to 5 July 2023. While in Port of Spain, the Secretary-General will also meet with Prime Minister Keith Rowley and other leaders on the margins of the Meeting.
In his address to the Opening Ceremony on Monday, the Secretary-General will underscore that the world needs to match the leadership, energy, and commitment of Caribbean countries on issues such as the restructuring of the international financial system and the climate crisis. He will also reiterate the United Nations’ commitment to call for more ambitious action in these two areas.
This visit coincides with CARICOM's period of celebration for its 50th anniversary. The announcement was made 30 June 2023 by a Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
